SHOPPING: NYS changes clothing tax

The next time you buy a pair of shoes or pick up the latest spring fashions, you may be paying less in sales tax.  Starting April 1st, New York State will drop its 4% tax for all shoes and articles of clothing that cost less than $110 (individually).  That's double the current limit of $55.

It's still up to local counties how much they want to charge in sales tax.  In the Rochester area, Wayne County is the only one to drop its tax entirely for shoes and clothing less than $110.  Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Seneca, Steuben, Wyoming, and Yates counties will continue to charge a local sales tax of 4%.  Ontario County will continue to charge 3.5%.
