Earlier this week, Buffalo's Roswell Park Cancer Institute unveiled its latest expansion plans. According the Buffalo News article, the $40 million addition will be 11 stories, and will house new clinical space as well as offices. Construction is expected to begin next winter.
Meanwhile, construction is moving along here in Rochester on a three story vertical expansion of the Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The new floors will add to the already state of the art facility that was completed in 2008.
The expansions could prove to be mutually beneficial to both cancer centers. In 2010, Wilmot and Roswell began exploring possible partnerships. According to an April article in the Rochester Business Journal, collaboration is becoming a reality. The cancer centers will remain independent, but are working on several research projects together. The RBJ article says an agreement was signed that would evenly split any profits resulting from the partnership.
Not to be left out, Syracuse will be getting a new facility of its own. Construction is underway on the new Upstate Cancer Center, part of the SUNY Upstate Medical center. The new building is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013.
